VDOT contractor’s leg amputated in I-264 overnight crash
A VDOT contractor was seriously injured overnight in a two vehicle crash on I-264 eastbound near the Broad Creek Bridge area. It happened shortly after 3 a.m. Crews amputated the contractor’s leg during the rescue process at the scene of the accident.
Virginia State police say a VDOT work crew was picking up cones on the left side of the roadway when a driver suddenly made a lane change and ran into the back of a VDOT work truck.
Virginia State police say there was a state trooper in the construction zone, while workers picked up cones. The state trooper saw the 2006 Dodge Charger strike the VDOT truck. 19-year-old VDOT contractor Luis Avaizaga-Torres of Newport News was hit and pinned under the work vehicle.
Police say the 19-year-old VDOT contractor had one of his legs amputated during the rescue process. He was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the vehicle that struck Torres is identified as 32-year-old Jahmeel Dushawn Riley of Virginia Beach. Police say Riley is facing several charges in the crash, including reckless driving, and DUI.
