Man accused of nearly beating police officer to death in court today
Joseph Staton is set to be arraigned on attempted capital murder charges.
It stems from the brutal beating of Police Officer James Winslow back on May 19.
The video above, taken from the camera atop Officer Winslow’s police car dashboard, shows Joseph Staton making a run for it after he was pulled over on Nansemond Parkway.
The suspicion was Staton was driving an SUV, stolen from Norfolk. Investigators say Winslow chased after Staton, which began the eight hour hunt for him.
During that time, police discovered Officer Winslow lying in a wooded area off Nansemond Parkway. They say he’d gotten in to a fight with Staton, and was severely beaten.
He’d suffered bad injuries to his face and other parts of his body.
Police eventually found Staton in Suffolk. He had changed clothes and even gave police a fake identity beforehand.
Now, he’s facing capital murder charges and is set to answer them this morning.
